This presentation reviews federal and state laws and basic principles related to medical records management including recordkeeping, allowable copying charges, retention, and destruction.  Participants will gain a better understanding of the legal and ethical obligations regarding medical records management to ensure compliance.

  1. Integrate current federal and state recordkeeping requirements into documentation.
  2. Identify and implement key medical record standards.
  3. Develop strategies to ensure compliance with federal and state laws related to medical record creation, maintenance, and access.
  4. Locate and utilize reliable resources to answer questions about legal and ethical issues related to the management of medical records.
