MSMS COMMITTEE ON MEMBERSHIP RECRUITMENT AND RETENTION

The purpose of the committee is to develop and adjust the annual membership recruitment and retention plan while review dues and dues rate structures, membership benefits and work to enhance and grow the membership base.

MSMS TASK FORCE ON ADVANCING HEALTH EQUITY

The goal of the task force is to eliminate health disparities by pursuing health equity throughout society by direct engagement with policymakers, medical schools, health care leaders, members and other stakeholders and to advance policies that lead to a more diverse physician workforce, greater cultural awareness, mitigation of social determinants of health, and transparent and equitable organizational structures.

COMMITTEE ON BIOETHICS

This Committee considers ethical issues related to medical practice, education, research, and public policy. It issues advisory opinions and sends recommendations for action to the MSMS Board of Directors. Additionally, this Committee is actively engaged in bioethics educational and outreach activities through its annual conference and other forums. The Committee meets two to three times a year.

PLANNING COMMITTEE FOR MSMS ANNUAL SCIENTIFIC MEETING

This Committee coordinates and plans the MSMS Annual Scientific Meeting, the organization's largest event of the year. The ASM offers more than 25 clinical courses during the four-day event in October. The Committee meets three times a year by conference call.

COMMITTEE ON CME ACCREDITATION

This Committee assures that quality CME activities are available to Michigan physicians through review, evaluation, and accreditation of medical education providers in the state. The Committee meets quarterly at MSMS Headquarters in East Lansing and/or by conference call.

COMMITTEE ON STATE LEGISLATION AND REGULATIONS

This Committee monitors and influences Michigan legislation related to health care. The Committee also works to enhance physician participation in the state legislative process. Meetings are held five times a year.

COMMITTEE TO REVIEW THE MSMS POLICY MANUAL

The MSMS Policy Manual is intended as a reference tool and resource document for MSMS members. It includes all policy actions of the MSMS House of Delegates and of the MSMS Board of Directors. The MSMS Policy Manual is reviewed annually to ensure that MSMS members have access to the Society's most recent policies on the vital issues of concern to the medical profession.

LIAISON COMMITTEE WITH MEDICAL LICENSURE BOARDS

This Committee serves as the liaison between the Michigan Board of Medicine and the Michigan State Medical Society. The Committee serves as a resource and counselor to the MSMS Board of Directors on issues regarding licensure of physicians. The Committee serves as the review body for applicants wishing to garner support from MSMS for appointment to the Michigan Board of Medicine. The Committee also serves as an advocate for those undergoing the discipline process on a state level, advocating for fairness and due process during the entire course of action. Meetings are held two to three times a year.

LIAISON COMMITTEE WITH MICHIGAN'S PUBLIC HEALTH

This Committee works to improve information and communication channels among public health officers, practicing physicians, and the public on environmental and public health issues of mutual concern. The Committee also advises the MSMS Board on key issues pertaining to public health policy and community well-being in Michigan. This Committee meets quarterly at MSMS Headquarters in East Lansing.

TASK FORCE ON BEHAVIORAL HEALTH INTEGRATION

The Task Force will monitor and explore current legislative and regulatory developments related to the state’s efforts to improve the coordination of physical and behavioral health services. Charges include reviewing and potentially weighing in on proposals to reform financing models and policies that impact individuals with mental illnesses, intellectual and developmental disabilities, and substance use disorders. The Task Force will meet as needed.

MSMS OPIOID STEWARDSHIP TASK FORCE

This Task Force will advise MSMS and help shape internal and external policies, positions and activities related to the utilization of opioids and alternative therapies, advancement of evidence-based treatment, and development of resources to support physicians in caring for patients with pain and/or prescription drug dependency. The Task Force meets as needed.
