Long COVID and Post-Viral Syndromes

May 24, 2022
6:30 - 8:00 pm EST

The CDC and AAPM&R predicts between 10%-30% of people who had COVID-19 will go on to develop Post-Acute Sequelae of COVID-19 (PASC), aslo known as Long Covid (AAPM&R).  This means anywhere between three and ten million Americans are experiencing symptoms associated with a post-viral syndrome.  Healthcare professionals can intervene sooner in the disease process with an increased understanding of post-viral syndromes and their multisystem presentation.  Through implementation of effective/efficient workup and management guidance, providers of varying specialty will see improved disease manageability and patient outcomes.

Objectives include:

  • Increase healthcare provider understanding and recognition of post-viral syndromes, MD/CFS, Long COVID, and common comorbid conditions leading to earlier interventions and more effective disease management.
  • Increase provider confidence and ability to manage complex patients keeping the care of the patient "at home."
  • Decrease inappropriate and unnecessary specialist referrals, reducing the time of onset-to intervention ratio.
  • Improve billing and coding of these complex diseases which will impact prevalence rates and subsequent funding/reimbursement demands.
  • Improve patient functioning, which will decrease disability claims, expedite return to work, and decrease economic and healthcare burden.
