Learning Objectives:
After this conference, attendees will be able to:
- Describe the nature of decision-making capacity, the tenuous nature of capacity assessments, and the vulnerabilities faced by patients with cognitive impairments in the course of their medical care.
- Describe different sociohistorical and moral positions on death, the clinical and moral contours of neurological death, and current controversies surrounding brain death declarations.
- Articulate the different ways in which patients with neurological impairements have been marginalized in medicine and different ways in which to promote their robust inclusion in their own clinical care.
