This presentation provides an overview of the life of William Beaumont, MD with a particular focus on his time as post surgeon at Fort Mackinac Island (1820-1825). During his tenure, Doctor Beaumont met and treated Alexis St. Martin, a young French Canadian voyageur severely injured in a tragic firearm accident in 1822. Their relationship formed the basis for nearly 240 experiments helping Doctor Beaumont to definitively describe the process of human digestion.
