Managing Challenging Interactions - Effective Communication is Key
Wednesday, June 10, 2026
1:00 – 2:00 PM EST
Misunderstandings between patients/families and practitioners can lead to patient dissatisfaction and poor outcomes. Working with unhappy patients is more difficult and can add stress to an environment that may already be burdened by staff shortage and burnout.
When dissatisfied patients become angry, they may vent their anger to practitioners, staff, third party payers, attorneys, regulatory bodies, and social media – and they may even escalate their frustration to verbal and physical threats and aggression. Underlying this behavior may be fear and anxiety over the diagnosis or treatment plan, pain from their health condition, financial difficulties, or other stressors in their life. This presentation will address the need for effective communication to increase patient understanding and adherence as well as offer strategies that can help de-escalate situations.
